About Medicaid Work Rules

Medicaid Work Rules explains the new Medicaid "community engagement" requirement from H.R. 1 (Public Law 119-21) in plain language. It is for adults on Medicaid, their families, and the caseworkers and navigators who help them.

The site has a step-by-step checker, an hours calculator, a full list of exemptions, and a guide for each state where the rule applies. Every page lists its sources. We rely first on the law itself, the CMS interim final rule published in the Federal Register on June 3, 2026, and official state Medicaid agency pages. We use news reports only to fill in dates or numbers that a state has announced but not posted, and we say so on the page.

When a state has published little, we say that instead of guessing. We do not publish phone numbers, portals, or dates we could not find from an official or clearly named source.

All state information was last reviewed on October 30, 2026.

How we keep this accurate

Every rule on this site is taken from primary sources — federal statute, agency guidance, and official state publications — and each page lists the sources it relies on. When a rule changes, we update the affected pages and the "Updated" date at the top of each page.

Our calculators run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or stored.

Independence

Medicaid Work Rules is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any federal or state government agency. We are an independent educational resource.
